Messi scores first penalty

Sergi Nogueras

Leo Messi had scored goals from all over the pitch before Saturday, but the game against Seville saw him bag his first ever penalty for Barca and show he’s just at home scoring from the spot as from anywhere else.

Palop, who’s quite an expert at penalty stopping, dived to his right for the Messi penalty, which the Argentinean coolly slotted in at the opposite corner. That was the Argentinean youngster’s first penalty in an official game for Barca, but he looked calm and collected as he hit his low shot into the corner for the second against Seville on Saturday. With Ronaldinho, Barca’s regular penalty taker, who scored from the spot in the last home game against Bilbao, missing through injury, Messi took on the responsibility and made no mistake.

29 goals and rising

That strike for Messi was his 29th goal with the first team, 23 in the league, 3 in the Spanish Cup and 3 more in the Champions League. His debut goal for Barca was on 1st May 2005 against Albacete when he became the youngest ever goal scorer for the club.

Youth team experience
It might have been his first penalty for the first team, but Messi has plenty of experience of scoring from the spot for the youth teams, where he was the regular penalty taker.
