Barça, top in 2008

Berta Brau

20 points from 8 games, thanks to 6 wins and 2 draws means Barça had the best record of all top flight teams over the first two months of the new year.

Frank Rijkaard’s side is the only unbeaten team in La Liga so far this year, while the other teams at the top of the table have all suffered more than one loss. Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid have lost 3 times, Villarreal and Sevilla have lost 2 and Espanyol have lost no less than 5.

20 points from 8 games

Barça have beaten Mallorca, Murcia, Racing, Osasuna, Zaragoza and Levante and drawn with Athletic Club and Sevilla, meaning just 4 of a possible 24 points have been dropped.
Such good results have allowed Barça to make up no fewer than seven points on leaders Real Madrid in just four games.

Leader in 2008

fcb-llevant_x3x.jpgBarça top the league table based only on results after the Christmas break. They have 20 points, while Almería have 17 and Sevilla 16. Real Madrid are fourth on 15 points, ahead of Villarreal and Valladolid with 14 and 13 points respectively. At the other end of the table, Espanyol have just 6 points and Murcia a paltry 4.

Unbeaten in 3 competitions

But it is not just in the league that Barcelona are going well, for they have also managed to avoid defeat in the many Copa de Rey and single Champions League matches played this year. Last week they collected an important win against Celtic in Glasgow and they have also got through cup ties against Alcoyano, Villarreal and Sevilla.

Goals in 2008
In 2008, Barça have scored 17 goals and conceded just 3, although Real Madrid have scored more, largely thanks to the seven they scored against Valladolid. But their goal difference is not as good as Barça’s, for they have let in six goals in the last 8 league outings.
