Eduard Manchón Dies

Eduard Manchón, a star of FC Barcelona's 5 Copes season, has died at the age of 80 after a long illness.

The legendary forward combined with famous names such as Ladisalo Kubala, Emilio Aldecoa, Juan Velasco, Joan Segarra and Antoni Ramallets as the Blaugrana won the league title, the Copa de Generalisimo, the Copa Latina, the Copa Martini Rossi and the Copa Eva Duarte in the 1951/52 season.

Born in Barcelona on July 24, 1930, Manchón shone on the left flank for his local team and wrote his name in the history books with his superb technique and ability to score goals from all angles.

Joined at 16

Manchón was raised in the area of Can Tunis as a son of a hard working family from Murcia. His father worked on the land at the Casa Atunez and that is where the young Eduard began to play. He joined Barça's youth team ranks at 16 and made his first-team debut against Palmeiras.

Between 1950 and 1957 he spent seven seasons in Barça's colours as the club enjoyed one of the most successful eras in their history. His honours included two league championships, the Copa Latina, four Copas de España and the Copa Eva Duarte on two occasions.

Culé legend

During his time at Camp Nou Manchón played 201 games and scored 81 goals. His assets included a great turn of speed, skill and an eye for goal. Although he was left-footed naturally, Manchón was adept with his right when required.

In 1957 Manchón left FC Barcelona and went on to play for Granada, Deportivo, Iberia and Hospitalet.

After he retired from the game he was linked to the Asociación Barça Veterans and could still be seen playing at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper until recent years.
