Ibra causes increase in Swedish membership

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Since Ibrahimovic signed his contract with FC Barcelona, the number of Swedish members has not stopped increasing. And many of these are joining despite living so far away.

On July 27, Zlatan Ibrahimovic was officially unveiled as the latest addition to the Barça squad, and within a week 30 Swedish residents had applied to the Barcelona Supporter Services Office (OAB) for membership – all keen to be associated to the club their hero had signed for.

Fans in Sweden

FC Barcelona have 430 members in Sweden, almost all of which are Swedish nationals, although there are a few Catalans and Spaniards living in the Scandinavian country. Since Ibrahimovic signed, there have been 150 new Swedish additions to the Barça family. Zlatan is one of the most famous sportsmen in his home country, and arouses passion wherever he goes.

More international members

Since Barça won the treble in May, the foreign membership has expanded considerably, with some interesting variations over the months.

Until now, most new members have been people living in Spain, but there has been an increased interest shown from abroad. In fact, in recent months, there have been more foreign, and not just Swedish, applications than there have been from home.

Balkan roots
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a big star in Sweden, but his roots go back to the former Yugoslavia. His mother is Croatian and his father a Bosnian, although Zlatan himself was born in Malmö, where he made his professional debut for the local club.
