Champions League trophy off to Madrid

This Friday the Champions League trophy ceremonially arrived in Madrid. The president of FC Barcelona led the travelling party in representation of the defending champions.


UEFA is taking the Champions League trophy to Madrid, where it will be contested on May 22. The Palacio de la Cibeles was the venue, and several dignitaries were in attendance.

President Joan Laporta was joined by the President of Honour Johan Cruyff, vice president Albert Perrín, and technical secretary Txiki Begiristain.

The event was set to start at 13.00 and was to be followed by a cocktail reception for all the guests.

Before arriving in Madrid, UEFA had taken the Champions League around such North American cities as New York, Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles. It has also gone to Asia, Latin America and Africa. This all forms part of UEFA’s desire to promote the competition worldwide.
