Johan Cruyff has been named as Honorary Presidentof FC Barcelona after a unanimous vote by the club’s board of directors. The Dutch legend will perform several formal duties.

Barça’s corporative director general, Joan Oliver, outlined the events that saw Cruyff’s name put forward for the position and carried by all members at a meeting on Friday. “It is an honour to recognise him,” the board member explained.

Oliver then explained that the naming of Cruyff was made in accordance with Article 16 of the same club statutes that was also used to make Joan Gamper club member number one. “It is a decision to honour him as a player, coach and an inspirational, father figure of the success that the club enjoyed in 2009,” he added.

“The board decided that Cruyff had everything required both as a player and a coach and as the founder of the conceptual model of play that the club has built its success on over the past few seasons,” Oliver stated. “Guardiola, Txiki and Alexanko, among others, are all now at the club and are sporting sons of Cruyff and this is another way of recognising that.”

Oliver added: “It seemed to us that now was the best moment as the team has been in such great form.”
