Memories of ex-players

Barça remembers Joan Segarra through the players who played with him. He was, for all of them, a committed footballer and a leader, and both they and all Barça fans and players and officials mourn his loss.

Below are some of the first reactions at www.fcbarcelona.cat at the news of the death of this marvellous Barcelona player and coach.

Ramon Alfonseda, President of the Agrupación Barça Veteranos: “He was the great captain, one of the best to represent Barça. The best Catalan player. He leaves a big hole and we all owe him a lot. He was a great character.”

Ferran Olivella (ex-FCB player 1956-1969): “Juanito was a captain who took control on the pitch: he shouted and everyone jumped. He was very positive and brave and a very practical player who almost always played in midfield and worked hard. I played five years with him, and he was a happy guy and very committed. He was always with the team, with all of us.”

Salvador Sadurní (ex-FCB player 1959-76): “I played five seasons with him (1959-1964), and I remember the atmosphere in the ground the day the fans paid tribute to him on 9 September 1964. He was great Barça player because he was from here; the player you’ve always known. One of the legendary players for the club and a great colleague and friend. He was like one of the family. He played for the team and gave his all.”

Antoni Ramallets (ex-FCB player 1946-61): “I remember him most as a happy person. He was always joking and making us laugh. He was a great player and an exceptional captain. He was a physically strong player and rarely injured. He was an excellent captain and always up to the job regardless of circumstances.”

Eladio Silvestre (ex-FCB player 1962-1972): “He was a sensational player. He helped his team-mates a lot and was a leader. He was a midfielder who also played at left-back and had a really good touch. He liked winning.”

Justo Tejada (ex-FCB player 1953-1961): “I played eight years with him and he was always with us. He was a model you could look up to and a complete player.”
