Barça take Europeanism award

Miriam Nadal

On Tuesday, FC Barcelona received the Premio Estrella 2007 for what it has done to project Europe worldwide.

The financial vice president of Barça, Ferran Soriano, went to the European Parliament’s offices in Barcelona today to collect the Premio Estrella 2007 in the name of the club for what it has done to promote Europeanism.

“We are very pleased to win this prize. One of our challenges, after winning titles and championships, is to represent Barcelona and Catalans in the world. We want to maintain the essence of a European club, and to be recognised for this makes us especially satisfied”, said Soriano.

ADICEC-PREMIOS2008_035.jpgHe added that in the globalisation era, Barça is an example of how tradition and modernity can work together: “It is an honour for Barça to be recognised this way” he said. It is not a sports award. Barça is a clear example of how you can be Catalan and European, have a 100 year history and not lose your essence. It is the only club that is a sports association that is the property of its members”, and most importantly he said: “we are pioneers in aspects of the 21st century. Nobody has done as much as us in terms of corporate social responsibility”.

Borràs and Rovira also present

Directors Jacint Borràs and Toni Rovira joined the Barça vice president at the event held in Paseo de Gracia, where the promoter, ADICEC (Asociación de Diplomados de los Cursos sobre la Unión Europea en Catalunya), also presented an individual award to Catalunya Ràdio journalist Xavier Solà.

Optimism and prudence
“We are happy, but staying prudent because there are 14 games left. That’s a lot of points and a few weeks ago we said that winning the league depended on what we do, because Madrid would definitely lose some games. It all depends on us. If we work as hard as we have done for the last few weeks, I'm sure we will win the league”, said Ferran Soriano about the title race, where matters have changed considerably following Barça’s 5-1 win over Levante and Madrid’ home defeat to Getafe.
