Barça to link up with UNHCR

Marc Parramón

FC Barcelona will sign an agreement with the United Nations Refugee agency (UNHCR) on January 22 in Geneva.

After becoming part of the programme to help underprivilieged children through the deal with Unicef and having joined in helping to create education programmes for young children in conjunction with UNESCO, the Barça Fundació wanted to try and help where they can against another vulnerable group of people: refugees. For that reason, FC Barcelona will sign a convenant of contribution with UNHCR on Tuesday, January 22 in Genevea.

foto_refugiats.jpgThe two bodies will unite their efforts to help work together with their respective programmes and to build common initiatives that try and bring a new quality of life to child reugees. A delegation from the club's Fundaciò, headed by president Joan Laporta, will travel to Geneva to finalise the agreement in the ACNUR headquarters. The former Portuguese Prime Minister, Antonio Gutérres, will receive the delegation as his role as head of the agency.

Joining forces

To help the most vulnerable children, the Fundació has, for months months, been working on diverse convenants and agreements with international agencies. The expierence of these large institutions makes it a privilege to have them involved and, above all, makes it a lot easyer to work together on these often difficult schemes. In this sense, the agreement with Unicef, signed in September 2006, and the tie-up with Unesco, which came about in November 2007, are two examples. The results of these two agreements are clear to see and they are working well and bearing fruit.

The statute
In 1951 the United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees defined what consitutes refugee status and what are their rights.

The statues says that a refugee is a person that "A person who owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country".
