Reality check in the quarters

Barça Sorli Discau’s European title bid came to an abrupt end in the Final Eight in Andorra, where a golden goal from Pedrito Gil put them out in their first match of the final phase of the European Cup.

The defending champions did fine in qualifying, where they were more solid than they were in the OK Liga, finishing undefeated and with an incredible goal difference that none of the other teams came anywhere close to matching.

But in the all-or-nothing final stages, back to the old Final Eight format, there is no room whatsoever for error, and Barça Sorli Discau hardly got an easy first round draw in Portuguese champion, Porto, who had also had a great regular season.

Barcelona went 2-0 up and it all looked to be on good course, but the Portuguese side bounced back with two of their own. Five minutes from the end, Reinaldo García put FCB back in command, but a scorcher from Pedrito Gil sent the game into golden goal extra time.

The game had barely restarted when the Gil was again the protagonist with another incredible strike from a harshly awarded foul against Sergi Panadero. That goal sent Barça crashing out of the contest in the first round.
