'Play it!' against racism
www.fcbarcelona.cat
The FC Barcelona Foundation has attended the 2nd International Conference of Young People against Racism held in Barcelona. It gave a talk about how 'Play it!’ can be used to combat racism.
Thirty young people from member cities of the Coalition of Cities against Racism, sponsored by
UNESCO, met in Barcelona from 10 to 13 September to learn more about racism and identify and oppose
xenophobic behaviour.
Role of sport
The FC Barcelona Foundation is partnering UNESCO and the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia
to fight against racism. At the conference it ran an event called 'Combating discrimination through
sport’. This talk, given in English, was based around the online training resource 'Play
it!’ and how it can be used to fight racism and discrimination.
Learning from examples
Through case studies the young people were able to learn about the initiatives
being run in sport in the fight against racism, such as UEFA’s recommendations for tackling
the problem.
Involved in social causes
This and other examples are included in the training resource 'Play it!’,
which was presented to attendees at the conference so that they can use it in the European NGOs and
associations to which they belong. The youngsters, aged between 16 and 26, came from Germany,
Belgium, Greece, France, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine.
