Sport for the underprivileged in Tangiers
www.fcbarcelona.cat
The FC Barcelona Foundation has held the first Workshop Sport and Solidarity for disadvantaged children in Tangiers, Morocco. The Workshop was directed by former Barça defender Julio Alberto.
The clinic was aimed at children from Beni Makada, one of the poorest districts of Tangiers. The
area has a large and fast-growing population fuelled by immigrants from rural areas, as well as a
lack of welfare services and public facilities for young people.
Two plans of work
The clinic was divided into two working groups. In the morning, a
number of training sessions were held for instructors and teachers from public schools. The aim of
the sessions was to train the participants in the organisation of non-curricula educational and
sporting activities.
In the afternoon, sporting and artistic (drawing and drama) activities were organised for 150
children, where the instructors put into practice the concepts learned in the morning, under the
supervision of Julio Alberto. Throughout the sessions, special emphasis was put on the values of
sport, citizenship and equality of the sexes.
Closing ceremony
The clinic ended on Sunday afternoon with a race followed by
a prize-giving ceremony for the winners plus attendance diplomas for both instructors and children.
