Henrique finally joined Barça’s squad in the summer of 2009, a year after the club signed him from Palmeiras. In his first season he played on loan for Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.
Henrique Adriano Buss, the sixth signing under Guardiola, was born on 14 October 1986 in Coritiba,
Paraná, Brazil. Starting at the age of 12 Henrique played his way up through the youth teams at
Coritiba before reaching the first team in 2006. The following season he won the League and
promotion to the First Division. He was chosen best centre back in Brazil’s Serie B.
Vanderlei Luxemburgo, the former Madrid manager, noticed him and on 30 January 2008 signed
him for Palmeiras. The São Paulo outfit ended the regular season equal on points with
Guaratingueta, but in the Paulista final easily outplayed Ponte Preta to claim the title.
On 22 July 2008 Barcelona announced they had signed him and subsequently that he was going
out on loan to Bayer Leverkusen. In his first season in Europe, Henrique played 27 games and
performed extremely well.
In spite of his youth he has already played for Brazil.
PROFILE
At 185 centimetres tall Henrique is a physically powerful centre back but he can also bring
the ball out of defence and play either in the middle of the defence or as a holding midfielder. He
is fast, efficient and positions himself well on the pitch.
