Sport and citizenship

The expression Sport and Citizenship was coined in the 1930s by then FC Barcelona president, Josep Sunyol, in his sports paper called La Rambla, and by Pompeu Fabra, then president of the Unió de Federacions Esportives Catalanas (UFEC), both major promoters and defenders of this vision of sports education and civic duty that is so firmly rooted in Catalan tradition. Having chosen this as the name for our new programme, the Foundation wishes to associate itself to this tradition, and recognise the work of those two gentlemen and the civic duty that inspired them.

Sport, the symbol of the value of effort, perseverance and self-confidence, teaches us about respect and courtesy and accustoms us to behaving with equity and honour. Being sporting also means playing as a team, being responsible and showing commitment to group projects. And finally, sport has created a universal language, a common reference between people and places of different cultures and, perhaps, an element for generating fellowship, equality and justice that eliminates differences and breaks down stereotypes and prejudice.

Play it

PLAY IT, is the name of the first project forming part of the “Sports and Citizenship” programme. The initiative is supported by the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Department of Education, the Unesco Centre for Catalunya and Akasvayu as the sponsor of the Foundation.

Sport is the essence for producing an online educational resource about values aimed at primary and secondary school pupils, which can be accessed by anybody at http://www.juega-la.cat.

PLAY IT consists of a broad and dynamic set of activities that, as well as visualising positive values, attitudes and behaviour on the basis of what are commonly known as “being sporting” and “fair play”, are also designed to offer a balance between spoken and written expression, and comprehending and finding information, with a special focus on ICTs (information and communication technologies) in the latter case.

The activities have been divided into three main areas: the pupil as an individual; the pupil and the environment and the pupil and the community.
