Eduardo Galeano wins Vázquez Montalbán prize

The Uruguayan writer has won the VII Premio Internacional de Periodismo Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, as announced by the director of the Fundación FCB Josep Cortada today in Sala París.


The nomination of Eduardo Galeano was attended by club president Sandro Rosell and many other members of the board, plus several previous winners, such as Juan Villoro, Joaquim Maria Puyal and Ramon Besa. The award will be presented in early 2011.

The winner

Eduardo Galeano was born on September 3, 1940 in Montevideo (Uruguay) and has become a prominent journalist and author in his country and Latin America. He started in the 1960s as editor of Marcha and later the newspaper Época. In 1973 he was imprisoned and forced to leave the country, going to Argentina where he founded the cultural magazine "Crisis". He has gone on to forge a career as a writer in genres from documentaries to fiction, and political and historical analysis.

His book 'El fútbol a sol ya sombra' (1995) was one of the most important Spanish language football books ever written. His books have been translated into more than twenty languages, including 'Memoria del fuego' (1986) and 'Las venas Abiertas de América latina' (1971). In 2010 we won the prestigious Stig Dagerman award for literature in Sweden.

Two prizes

The Premio Internacional de Periodismo Manuel Vázquez Montalbán offers prizes for sports journalism and cultural and political journalism and is the brainchild of the Fundación FC Barcelona, along with the Col•legi de Periodistes de Catalunya, who believe sport to form part of culture, and work in this area to promote better lifestyles and social cohesion, happiness and coexistence.

Seven year history

It was created in 2004 and pays tribute to a true master of the written word in Manuel Vázquez Montalbán and seeks to stimulate creative journalism that respects faithfulness to the same civil values that were so present in the life and works of the man after whom the award is named.

Jury of seventh edition

The members of the jury this year were Sandro Rosell, Ramón Puente, Carles Vilarrubí, Josep Cortada, Daniel Vázquez, Mňnica Terribas, Joaquim Maria Puyal, Borja de Riquer , Jordi Basté, Anton M. Espadaler, Jaume Pujol-Galcerán, Simon Kuper and Ramon Besa.

Award for Juan José Millás
In the general interest journalism category, awarded by the Colegio de Periodistas and different Catalan newspapers, the winner was Juan José Millás, per “for his literary imprint on journalistic genres” and “a unique and committed view of the exercise of journalism”.
