FCB Foundation supports AIDS research

www.fcbarcelona.cat

The FC Barcelona Foundation has donated 30,000€ to the HIVACAT project to support research into a vaccine to eradicate AIDS in children.

The HIVACAT project is directed by Drs. Bonaventura Clotet and Josep Maria Gatell, and is the fruit of an unprecedented collaboration between the private and public sectors. Sixty scientists are currently involved in the project, which has placed this country at the forefront of research into AIDS.

The objective: a vaccine

The donation will help in the development of a preventative vaccine that can be used with children in developing countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. This part of the world has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS. The Foundation is already present here supporting the XICS programme and UNICEF.

The Foundation will also support a publicity campaign highlighting the need to invest further in this kind of research.

Research in Catalonia
The Foundation has been emphasizing the fight against AIDS in children, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, since 2006. This has been in the form of a variety of social and health initiatives, to which has now been added a research project here in Catalonia involving many highly regarded scientists.
